December 2016

Saturday, January 21, 2017

So, December was a month of extended holiday and meetups with friends, and also making new years resolutions. I was just cruising around on autopilot - meeting friends and spending time with family. Plus who can forget that impromptu trip to Bali/Lembongan? December 2016 was definitely one of the highlights of the year, not just because I got to go overseas again, but because it was just so chock full of activity - places to go and people to see!

Started off the month with a really interesting trip to Tetsuya at Goodwood Park Hotel. Have heard so much about it and I finally got to try it that day. Pictured here is their uni. It was my first time trying uni! It has a really unique texture and has an aftertaste similar to crab roe?

Pictured next is their mini-gyudon bowl or beef bowl. Despite what reviews say, the beef slices were grilled to succulent perfection.

Sashimi - Full tuna belly, half tuna belly and yellowtail with caviar and truffle. I think this was the best dish of the night.

Dinner at Yaki Yaki Bo at NEX Serangoon. It's one of the more value-for-money teppanyaki places you can eat at which doesn't compromise on flavour, without having to break the bank for more fine-dining fare! Clockwise from top left, prawn and beef set, grilled oysters, snow fish and wagyu beef teppanyaki.

Next, I was hosting a friend from out of town, so I took him to No Signboard Seafood at Esplanade. That was another night of excess. We had, clockwise from top left, curry Canadian Dungeness crab, white pepper Scottish Brown crab, smoked duck slices, cuttlefish kangkong and bullfrog in ginseng soup. All in all an amazing meal and a great time with a friend I don't always get to see.

Asia Grand Restaurant at Odeon Towers. Clockwise from left, peking duck slices in popiah, bamboo clam, fish maw soup, chicken fillet and mango pudding. Does it seem like all I do is eat?? Haha!

Aoki at Shaw House. Wow, this meal I have to say, takes the kicker. It was even more extravagant than Tetsuya because we ordered way more! We had half-fatty tuna, flounder sushi, shrimp and abalone sushi, roe chawanmushi, chirashi don, yellowtail sashimi with black caviar and truffle shavings, fatty and half-fatty tuna sushi, uni and sushi roll and grilled smelt fish.

'Twas a night to remember because it was so close to Christmas as well...

That day was Overeasy at One Fullerton with Belly. And then Zouk with CS and friends!

This was actually the soft launch of new Zouk at Clarke Quay or Cannery.

The lights are so amazing. Plus the whole place is very roomy now, cavernous even. Pity they did not bring the wine bar and velvet concepts over though.

It being really crowded is a very common sight nowadays.

The crowd is just M-A-D after 12.30am.

Had kebab tacos at Fat Prince at Peck Seah street followed by drinks at Kilo lounge at Tanjong Pagar. Stumbling upon the latter was really a lucky surprise. We were literally walking and chanced upon this cool looking door with a floor-to-ceiling walkway. On Fridays and Saturdays they even have underground DJs that spin next to the bar in a caged off dance floor.

Shin Yeh at Clarke Quay. Had the freshest pork liver, pork belly, jellyfish, muachee and mango pudding. That night we somehow stumbled upon Zouk again (and it was a Thursday so only Phuture was open).

A Taste of Thailand tzechar at Chong Pang. Really simple but delicious fare with the parents. We go to this place pretty often, which is to say at least 2-3 times a month? Pictured here is what we usually order when we are there - Chilli crab, sambal kangkong and fish maw soup.

Another one of my favourite places to go to is Paradise Dynasty (not to be confused with the neighbouring fine dining restaurant). The multi-flavoured xiaolongbaos, jellyfish vinaigrette with seafood and osmanthus soup are a must order while you are there.

Had dimsum with Dad during pre-Xmas dinner shopping. This was Crystal Jade at Plaza Singapura. Initially wanted to go to Taste of Nanjing but unfortunately their lunch hour ends around 2pm and by that time we were too late... :(

Finally, one of the highlights of December is the Christmas dinner we would have every year. While everyone is cutting hams and carving chickens or turkies, we would be munching on decidedly more Chinese fare. Safe to say Christmas dinner is basically pre-CNY dish experimentation.

This was the spread this year!

The cousin made devilled eggs.

And my dad contributed this chilli crab (dinner was at the uncle's this year).

Potato salad.

Winter peas.

Tofu skin.

Hard AF pork knuckle.

River shrimp. Brought here from Shanghai so it's a delicacy okay (do not underestimate its tiny size, it's full of flavour!)

Pork wrapped enoki courtesy of BL again. (This meal made me very self-reflective on my lack of kitchen poweress)

Auntie's famous braised beef.

Ham.

This is a Shanghainese dish called Kaofu. It's very yummy!

Drunken chicken by grandma.

Had so much fun eating, gossiping and even making our semi-monthly calls to granny and gramps in SH.

Boxing day shenanigans. Caught La La Land (it is to die for! So good.) and had a quick bite at Pasar Bella. Been wanting to try the food for the longest time.

Had this kimchi sushi roll...

And chicken cutlet dish.

What it looks like on the inside.

Ended the last few days of December with a trip to Open Farm Community at Dempsey.

They are purportedly au natural and organic, pictured here is their garden, where they grow the vegetables.

A well-designed outer area.

The inside.

We had lamb shank...

Rigatoni...

Steak tatare...

Seabass...

And curried cauliflower.

Afterwards dessert time at Antoinette at Mandarin Gallery.

Strawberry crepe!

Caramel crepe.

Always a riot with these girlies.

This was also the day before my trip to Lembongan.

Snapchat is hilarious.

Finally I leave you with a shot of the worse ever looking firework in the history of mankind... Taken from the rooftop of Kinki at Customs House on NYE. Thank you wind direction for the spectacular display of  failed aerial pyrotechnics. Never again?

Adventure to the Balkans Travelogue Pt. 1: Zagreb, Croatia

Hola at you readers! It's me, Sasha Bear here - and today we're FINALLY going to post about my trip to the Balkans circa Octo...

Quote I Love

“To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never to forget.”
