January Jimmies

Sunday, February 12, 2017

January was as usual jam packed with activities, starting off 2017 with a bang. Kicking off the month of January were many foodscapades and a concert to boot! Plus who can forget Lunar New Year at the end of January and the feasting and merrymaking!

We start off with the year with a collection of food adventures!

This is the pokebowl from the newly opened Hawaiian-themed eatery on Telok Ayer called Pololi. Prices were pretty hefty. It's more expensive compared to A Poke Theory and Aloha Poke, with much less sides. In terms of taste, I'd have to say A Poke Theory>Aloha Poke>Pololi. Pololi's pokebowl has a large portion of base (rice and salad), but the salmon is pretty much tasteless compared to A Poke Theory, the latter of which somehow manage to infuse the salmon/tuna with a super umami taste.

Then comes the chirashi don from D2TLLRY along Market Street. It's newly opened too and I chanced upon it one day during lunch time. Chirashi bowls are basically sashimi-topped rice bowls - similar to pokebowls except the latter is Hawaiian-themed. This was not bad at $18. Like an above average I'd say.

Craving Korean BBQ one day so off we went to Super Star K along Tanjong Pagar Road. Delicious beef short rib and pork belly.

Lunchtime at Standing Sushi Bar Chevron house. The sets are pretty worth it at ~$20.

At this hidden cafe called Word. along Upper Thompson. They stand out because they are owned by Muslims and pride themselves on the fact. The owners are also super friendly! Check out their rainbow bagel burger!

Did you know that Standing Sushi Bar has a $3/plate of sashimi and $2/shot of sake every Monday and Thursday? I bet you didn't. Now you know!

At Tomyum Mama (that's tom yum maggi noodles) along Upper Thompson!

At Wisma Atria's Marche-like concept, Picnic. You get to choose dishes from pretty food stalls within the restaurant area. Pictured here are the seafood pizza and beef kimchi tacos.

Brunch at P.S. Cafe!

Brunch at Oriole Cafe. Had the salmon poke, chicken tikka tapas and a burger-wich with tea and fries.

Somewhere in the month, I went to Haidilao. I want to dedicate the next few photos to it because of how awesome it's non-dining services are:

Right when you enter, you're greeted by this cute minion mascot.

You're served a set of popcorn, longan, cherry tomatoes and sotong crisps, also wintermelon tea, for free.

I did a free gelish manicure while I was waiting too, and I watched TV while I was at it.

The food itself was actually only alright. I think it's because we chose some funny soup bases? Like tomato and sichuan pickles. Choose something more vanilla like mala and mushroom chicken, because the soup base we chose was just overpowering!

Next we have Joy's brithday at Loof! Really fun time catching up, plus we got Joy essential Singaporean snacks for her trip back to Germany.

Back at CAPT for the annual alumni dinner with Kal:

Followed straight with Diplo's set at Zouk. My first time catching an international DJ's set!

Um, it was for a lack of a better word, STRAIGHT UP INSANE? Look at the crowd!

Our table that night. It was awesome but also at the same time, really bad*. Haha.

*Bad as in the Michael Jackson's Bad.

AB. SO. LUTE. MAD. NESS.
Interlude!

Chinese New Year is next on the list. I love how everyone gathers together and has a good time. Our family here in Singapore is small, with just us and my cousin's family, so CNY tends to be a cosy affair (and conversely, fat angbaos because the kids are just so much more precious, hehe).

This year, we cooked up a storm at our house, with Uncle contributing his famous Pengcai. This could easily cost up to SGD500 at a restaurant alright! But it's priceless because it's homemade.

Day 2, we went to Putien for lunch with the family friends and had another monster pengcai. That's my favourite thing ever for CNY?

Bored while waiting to have CNY lunch:

Lastly we have the annual FRAGILE HEARTS cny meetup at Sum Kee Seafood and Skyline. Always a riot with this bunch. Had to escape early because I had a photoshoot the following morning. (more about that soon in another post).

And then let's end off with some shots of... none other than Benji the ultimate cutie! Hehe.

Adventure to the Balkans Travelogue Pt. 1: Zagreb, Croatia

Hola at you readers! It's me, Sasha Bear here - and today we're FINALLY going to post about my trip to the Balkans circa Octo...

Quote I Love

“To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never to forget.”
