Jamming it up in January 2018

Saturday, February 10, 2018

With the blink of the eye, January has passed us by. The sub-25 degree temperature was a departure from the scorching heat of Singaporean summers, and us residents of the Little Red Dot were lulled into a peaceful, warm and cuddy first month of the year. So cozy up as we dive into the going ons of January!

This was actually from the tail end of 2017 but I missed it out from my December 2017 round up. Visited Lulu's Lounge with Cher after our AC reunion. It's a bar/club formed by the founders of Employees Only (my favourite!) and Bang Bang (the perennial drunk-after-3am-clubbing-spot). Wednesday nights is their Ladies Night and it consists of free flow Prosecco and live music including a saxophonist who would free style according to the pop tunes!

It has a beautifully done interior with amazing purple lighting (which is always the most flattering for photographs).

One regret I had was that I forgot it was Ladies Night and consequently free flow Prosecco. I thought Cher ordered a bottle and was savouring my drink slowly when after 1h in I realised my folly... #DOH

Very artfully done alcohol bottle island behind the bar, which is in front of the stage.

Free nibbles and tunes from the Bronx all night until around 10.30pm where they bring the saxophonist in.

Have been taken to late night ice cream at Upper Thompson on weekends. It's a great place to hand post 9pm where restaurants are usually closed for last order. There're prata, zichar places and dessert shops all along the street where you could go for a late night jaunt.

At the start of January, went to Fat Cow with J because of Entertainer 1-for-1. Oh my goodness golly are the prices here jaw dropping. Had the most decadent wagyu beef bowl with uni, caviar and foie gras. It's okay for a one time try but I don't think I'd come back for this because it's just too much on the palate?

There's the braised beef claypot bowl too. I found this sort of dry. I dunno, J enjoyed it. To each their own I guess!

Been taken to this new cafe/bar/casual resto that replaced Bottles and Bones at Chevron House. It's called Wolf and they serve coffee in the mornings, alcohol at night and ingredient bowls in between. Surprisingly, they're been doing 1-for-1 coffees every since their opening a month ago. That makes for something like $2.75 a cup for the large sized cups when you order 1 and get 1 free. I like it! The coffee is pretty smooth.

Dinner at a Japanese resto in Suntec

Played Psych! for hours after and died laughing.

Next up was celebrating Joy Joy's birthday at P.S. Cafe Ann Siang!

Always fun times trading ratchet stories with the #sistals.

Went for a drink after at American Club and ended up listening to a 30min pitch about crypto... #tulipmaniamuch

Happened to have a zichar craving and ate supper at Upper Thompson.

Did I tell you I was addicted to these tztutzu? It's like a crustacean/snail like critter that you have to eat in a funny way. Coupled with sambal it was pretty yummy.

Late night jaunts to Udders/Salted Caramel is always very much welcomed. Pictured here is the trifecta of creamy ice cream flavours - rum and raisin, salted caramel and cookies'n'cream.

Also discovered the heaven that is patbingsoo - which is the red bean shaved ice Korean dessert and also its other counterpart bingsoo, which is the shaved ice version of this really yummy dish. I always try my luck and suggest to my parents Korean food for dinner, but alas they never want to eat Korean. I chalk that up to cultural differences and a palate unaccustomed to gochujang (red pepper paste).

Visited Manhattan Bar during the first week of January. Not gonna lie, it was pretty swell. For the same prices as a Telok Ayer bar, you get a much nicer ambience, interior design, service and a bomb jazz covers of pop songs playlist at this bar located on the second floor of Regent Hotel.

They even have two rooms where they age they whiskies and even concoct with an ingredient list.

Their menu is organised into "ages" where the food and cocktails are named after a certain time period. Pictured here are their New York dogs. Pretty alright I suppose. The cool thing about Manhattan Bar is that they have their own in-house kitchen along with their bar, which is not something usual for hotel bars, which mostly get their food ferried over from the restaurants.

Pancakes galore - this was at Tiong Bahru bakery for a business talk.

The fluffiest pancakes I've ever tasted, which was at Plentyful at Millenia Walk.

Had ramen one of these days. It's like an upgraded version of Japanese bakchormee? Ramen taste the same to me everywhere I go it seems.

Sometimes after facials I'll treat myself to a meat at The Sushi Bar. The queue there is always super long. The food is pretty alright. There's an air of a family Japanese restaurant when you dine there even though the staff aren't necessarily Japanese.

Had American-Chinese food at Lokee. It's a concept by the Tunglok group it seems? A lot of effort has gone into the decoration and the like. Even the menu features a special slide out of special dishes.

Had the General Tso's chicken and...

Olive fried rice. Both had interesting tastes to say the least - you wouldn't be able to find them anywhere else.

Popped by Chimichanga's one of the Mondays. Their oysters are really really good. When you talk about $2 oysters, you don't expect them to be so meaty and juicy, and specially air flown from Japan.

The $18 Asane steak is also such a steal for the price.

And here comes the chicken tacos.

Had orange juice and salted caramel cake for tea break one of these days. Its seems like juice and cake is the best way to unwind nowadays.

J's giant peanut butter milkshake at Clinton Street Baking Co. or as I like to call it, heart attack in a cup.

Biscuits - or the Southern American version of what a biscuit looks like. I assume it's Southern American because Popeyes and Louisiana Chicken serves this sort of biscuits.

The main show - blueberry pancakes or flapjacks, as they are known in America. So soft and fluffy. I'm a big pancake and waffles eater so always on the lookout for great desserts.

This was taken at the Light Fest. Boy on boy we got lost/got the timings wrong on multiple occasions and finally stumbled on the light shows. This was the interactive light display at National Gallery.

Running away into the mysteries of the moonlight.

There was a really nice flea market there but unfortunately there was no flooring and it rained so there was mud everywhere.

Thai Milk ice cream to soothe the heat of the night.

I shall leave you with a video of Benji noming on a corn cob. Isn't he just the sweetest!

Adventure to the Balkans Travelogue Pt. 1: Zagreb, Croatia

Hola at you readers! It's me, Sasha Bear here - and today we're FINALLY going to post about my trip to the Balkans circa Octo...

Quote I Love

“To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never to forget.”
